Getting Started is Easy

The trash that is collected in Glen Ridge is burned in an incinerator in Newark, releasing dirty smoke into the atmosphere. The most important thing we can do to affect change is reduce the amount of waste we produce, reuse what we have, and refuse what we don't want.

  • Replace disposables with reusable items (rechargeable batteries, razors, refillable ink cartridges, etc).
  • Shop used - Freecycle, Buy Nothing and Curb Alert sites, thrift stores. See our Donate your stuff page for more ideas.
  • Refuse receipts and bags at stores, and plastic cutlery and straws at restaurants.
  • Opt out of junk mail and catalogs.
  • Pack lunch and leftovers in reusable containers rather than plastic bags. If you do use plastic bags, wash them and reuse them.
  • Walk or take public transportation.
  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.
  • Use cloth napkins.
  • Borrow books, magazines, and other media from the local library.
  • Reuse shopping bags -- put a few in your car trunk so you always have some with you.
  • Recycle at home - remember, Glen Ridge is single stream so only one container is needed!
  • When shopping online, order all of your items at once so they come in fewer boxes and require less packaging.
  • Look for items that are made with recycled content.
  • Start a compost pile -- or hire a service to take your food scraps.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous waste.
  • Recycle -- check here to see what you can include in your bin.
  • Choose loose-leaf tea and reusable coffee filters
